![]() ![]() TEACHING IMPROV
![]() I am conducting an Improv class once a week just outside of Philadelphia, PA. The class is Thursday evenings from 7 - 9 PM.
I believe that people learn best by doing. So my two hour class is full of different short form games and loads of play. I teach how to play the games, and then customize the training to what will help each student to get the most out of the class. No boring lectures, just straight talk and plenty of game playing. Improv is a major part of auditioning and in building characterizations. Those are two of the major focuses of my classes. The classes are bound to build confidence, when auditioning or when things go astray on stage during live performances. One of the things that makes this Improv class unique is that students will get up to a year to attend ten sessions, at a low price. That means that working actors won't miss anything if they can't attend a week, here or there. So far, the class has been a hoot! ![]() ![]() Posted By PhilipJ at 11:26 AM
![]() ![]() EXPLORING PENNSYLVANIA
![]() Earlier this year, I was filmed in a segment of Explore PA on public television station WITF.
The show will air on Public Broadcasting System's WHYY (Channel 12 in the Philadelphia area) Saturday November 24, 2007 at 11 AM. It will also air on WITF in the Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, York area November 3, 2007 at 3:00 PM. It has previously aired on stations in Pittsburgh (WQED), Philadelphia (WYBE and WHYY), Wilkes Barre-Scranton (WVIA), and Erie (WQLN), in PA, and Salisbury (WDPB). You can see advertising for it, (and a picture of Jennifer Garden my fellow traveler and me) at http://www.witf.org/xpa/308.htm. In the photo on the web page, I am on the left, show host Elizabeth Jennings is in the middle and Jennifer Garden is on the right. Jennifer and I were both storytellers for Once Upon a Nation, where we became good friends. When the WITF opportunity arose to explore the underground railroad, I asked Jennifer to join me, and she accepted. We had a great time, and the crew from WITF was wonderful: Heather Woolridge, Peter Aufiero, and Andrew "Crash" Gena ![]() ![]() Posted By PhilipJ at 11:16 AM
![]() ![]() DEEP BLUE SEA?
![]() (October 2007) I have been chosen by Jen Painter of Temple University to portray Mr. Hays in a film called "A Sea of Something More".
Mr. Hays is the father of the female lead role in the film. The female lead role is a recent college graduate. Talk about art imitating life: I have two daughters who have graduated college. ![]() ![]() Posted By PhilipJ at 11:12 AM
![]() ![]() ONE SKINNY SANTA
![]() (October 2007) I will be portraying Santa Claus this Christmas season at the Macy's just outside of City Hall in center city Philadelphia.
I went to the audition wearing a couple of thick towels inside of an over-sized shirt, so I would look like Santa Claus. I practiced saying "Ho, ho, ho" in a deep voice. Luckily, Macy's has a body suit for me to wear, so I don't have to put on weight. I was told that I would sweat a lot in the suit, so I may want to put on weight just so I don't waste away to nothing. I'm really looking forward to working with the children, and their families. BTW, I'm 5' 8" and 158 lbs. at this time. This will take some acting, or a lot of calories. ![]() ![]() Posted By PhilipJ at 11:05 AM
![]() ![]() A GREAT BREAK
![]() I have been chosen to be represented by a national audio and video production company that uses actors for corporate films nationwide.
This is a leading edge company located in Malvern, PA. Corporations that use them as an audio and video production facility will be able to select me for their training films, industrial films or commercials. I am really happy about being chosen, and can't wait for the first call for work. Let's hope it's soon. ![]() ![]() Posted By PhilipJ at 11:04 AM
